A dynamic forward-thinking company with a startup culture, based in Rosebank, is looking for Data Scientists


ROLES  & RESPONSIBILITIES 
  • The company is assembling a Big Data Analytics team to drive new and innovative ideas to business units
  • The team will use an investigative, Hadoop-based computing platform to bring un-modeled, multi-structured data (e.g., massive data logs, documents, social media and transactional data) into an investigative data store for experimentation
  • The core Data Analytics team will consist of a Data Scientist and Hadoop Developers working alongside the Business Development Director and subject-matter experts
  • The team will use a combination of existing tools and self-generated code to explore data
  • Data exploration will be used to test business hypotheses, develop algorithms, hack through defined problems and provide feedback on both existing products and products under development
  • R & D greenfield projects
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

  • Matric
  • Bachelor’s degree with honours post-graduate in Math, Statistics, or Computer Science
  • Experience with applied quantitative research working with real-world data, either through thesis research, internships, or work experience
  • BA/BS, MS Degree in Math, Statistics, or Computer Science
  • Good exploratory analysis skills
  • Hands-on experience hacking data using Python, Perl, Java and / or C#
  • an obsession for information, solving insurmountable problems and finding unique ways to accelerate our business
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully complete projects with large or incomplete data sets and be able to provide solutions
  • Some advanced statistical or computational programming
  • Familiarity with modern databases and distributed computing systems (experience with Hadoop, HBase, Hive, Pig, Solr, Lucene, and / or Mahout is preferred)
  • Programming expertise with statistical software packages (R, Matlab, or SPSS)
  • The ability to generate and create algorithms and models rather than relying on out-of-the-box ones
  • The ability to perform quality analytics across myriad data sources
  • Experience with predictive analytics, optimisation, and stochastic processes
  • Familiarity with algorithms in predictive modeling such as regression, clustering, decision trees, neural networks, and SVM
  • Machine learning experience preferred
