Network Engineer
Purpose
- Provide operational implementation, management and support for all services provided to clients 24 X 7, ensuring SLA’s are met and client satisfaction is guaranteed.
Responsibilities
- Install hardware, for example, cables, hubs, routers, firewalls, intrusion prevention devices, and wireless adaptors when required.
- Design and perform WAN and firewall configurations.
- Perform network troubleshooting to isolate and diagnose network problems, working with clients, equipment vendors and telecom providers to bring issues to resolution.
- Upgrade network hardware and software components as required.
- Solve complex problems with many variables.
- Provide after-hours operational network support.
- Setup and monitor network performance pro-actively with SNMP and RMON tools.
- Setup and perform network disaster recovery simulation.
- Monitor, review and interpret network logs, security and documentation.
- Determine and actively pursue network device automated fail over in order to support SLA 100.
- Take ownership of the network support tools.
- Stay abreast of how technology infrastructures are currently impacting and driving network troubleshooting methodology.
- Determine production direction and its impact on network troubleshooting methodology.
- Provide monthly feedback sessions to management regarding troubleshooting concerns and complexity.
- Take ownership of identifying simplified troubleshooting methods.
- Motivate to management and implement approved simplified troubleshooting methods.
- Provide monthly router and switch configurations to management for review.
- Take ownership of router and switch device configuration and IOS backups, to disk and to tape. Ensure that all network configuration, system images and network diagnosis are backed up.
- Juniper JNCIA, JNCIS and JNCIP.
- Ensure all current network related qualifications remain in qualified status and to actively identify, motivate and pursue additional qualifications that may become relevant to this job description.
- 10+ years of experience in a networking environment.
- 10+ years of experience in operational network engineering (design, implement and troubleshoot).
- Demonstrate knowledge of a wide variety network solutions, standards and protocols.
- Juniper routers, switches and firewalls.
- Strong skill set and experience in all 7 network layers.
- Sound knowledge of TCIP complex sub netting.
- Setup, designating and maintaining of routing protocols (BGP, EIGRP, OSPF and RIPv2).
- Asterisk VoIP PABX and call centre technologies.
- Working knowledge of Voice-over-IP (SIP and H.323) and IP telephony services as well as quality of service (QoS) and Power over Ethernet (PoE).
- A solid working knowledge of wireless technology.
- Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer or related qualification would be an advantage.
- Documenting in MS Word and in MS Visio all network topology changes.
- Working knowledge of Radius authentication on 802.x.
- Network Routing and Switching Specialist with an ability to manage, configure, monitor and maintain all components of the WAN and LAN.
- Sound knowledge the following telecommunication technologies.
- X.21 Links (Diginet).
- ADSL.
- Microwave Radios.
- Metro Ethernet.
- ATM.
